Winter 2010 in Virginia finally made up for all the snowless winters we’ve had over the past 13 years living out here. The snow started Friday night, February 5. Matt was supposed to go to the hockey game but ended up watching it at home. By the end of the game, 8 or so inches of snow had fallen and the streets in our neighborhood were impassable. The snow picked up in intensity overnight and by midday on Saturday we had about 2 feet of snow (the National Weather Service said officially for our area 25 inches). We spent the weekend indoors unless Matt was out shoveling all that snow. This area though is unequipped to handle this much snow and most jurisdictions had spent their entire snow removal budgets on the 16 inches of snow we got before Christmas. Roads, highways and the metro were all impassable or in the case of metro - shut down. That meant the federal government shut down Monday and Tuesday as clean-up in DC lagged big time. Unfortunately, an actual blizzard arrived Wednesday early morning and dropped another 10 inches with 40-50 mph winds. Portions of the beltway and I-95 were closed to traffic and of course the metro was snowed in. That meant no work again on Wednesday and Thursday. By Thursday night we all had a major case of cabin fever. It was back to work on Friday but the District was still a mess and remained that way until after President’s Day (AAA estimated the traffic nightmare on Friday, February 12 to be as worse as September 11) . In the meantime, Matt shoveled the driveway about 5 times and dug out our second car parked outside twice. He’s had it with snow. Paige too seems a little disturbed by the volume and height of the snow. She wasn’t really “digging” it. Our snowbird from Minnesota loved it.
Matt created this time lapse movie of the first snow fall. Enjoy it and the pictures below.
